Especially in cat urine, exposure to large volumes of highly concentrated amounts of ammonia in urine can cause respiratory illnesses to develop as well as skin and eye irritation. As the urine evaporates, ammonia is dispelled in a gaseous state. The toxic fumes can corrode nasal passages, airways, and lungs.
