The difficulty of searching and trusting a company that claims they perform mold abatement correctly especially in the Baltimore Maryland can be daunting .
Just take a look through the internet and you will find 100’s of companies claiming they perform mold abatement . But how do you trust them ? What is the right process to perform mold abatement ?
Let me guide you through the maze of confusion . But first let me tell you who I am . My name is Jeffrey Cohn and I with my brother Mike Cohn own SI Restoration. Let’s pretend that you have just noticed what appears to be mold in your basement . You hair raises up as you go upstairs to find your phone or lap top .
The volume of mold abatement companies ( mold removal, mold cleaners , mold remediation ) companies is numerous . Of course you see that every company says they’re the best and certified . But you have never heard of their certifications . How do you know that one of these mold abatement experts are the right company .
Most customers have no idea and depend on who is the cheapest and who makes them feel comfortable . Most customers find out later that their feelings were incorrect and the certification organization was just some guy out of their basement .
Sounds like a made up story , but sadly it’s true . I call the mold abatement industry the wild west . Now there are states that have developed required licenses for both mold abatement ( mold removal , mold remediation ) , but the remaining states are still in the wild west stage .
So if you are not in those states with required licenses like Baltimore Maryland and Washington DC ( DC has a mold abatement license but just for apartments ) , then how do you make the best choice ?
To be as unbiased as possible , I’m going to review a few mold abatement processes and you can decide .
- The super killer mold cleaner- There are mold abatement guys who advertise that for $ 600.00 , they can get rid of your mold . They come over and use some wild sounding mold killing chemical name and wipe away the mold . They claim that the chemical will absorb into your walls . The problem is that mold has roots similar to a weed . When you use any type of chemicals to just wipe the mold , you are removing the “ flower” of the weed . The problem is that you are leaving the root system continuing to grow inside the walls. Now the super mold killer chemical guys claim that the chemical will absorb in the wall, but you need enough chemical to kill the roots and by the time you put enough chemical in the wall, you have ruined the wall. These roots will regrow the mold in the same area . To make things worse , cleaning the mold will release mold spores into the air creating new mold colonies and breathing issues .
- Mold abatement and mold testing – There are companies that offer both mold testing and mold abatement and yes they are located in Baltimore Maryland and Washington DC. Too. These companies make it sound like they are saving you time as you don’t have to use two companies . But the issue that arises is called a “conflict of interest”. The best way to explain it , is when a child comes home from school and says he got an A++++ on his test . Never heard of a A++++ .? Well it’s made up , because the child checked his test and gave himself this grade. As you can see it’s silly to test yourself and say you did a great job. So as every state that has a mold abatement license will say , you can’t offer both testing and mold abatement .
- Certified Mold Abatement Companies – I can’t for ethical issues mention the different mold certifications organizations . Most of them are small organizations made up by one or two contractors. The only mold abatement certified organization that I believe in is the IICRC. I can say this with confidence , because all state mold abatement licenses require some or all parts of their licenses to mention the IICRC S502 Guidelines . The IICRC also certifies companies through educational courses . The IICRC S502 Guidelines were designed with the help of many government organizations like the EPA and CDC, to make sure that all agree upon the correct way to remove mold. These organizations can not officially tell you how to remove mold , but have contributed to the IICRC S502 Guidelines in someway .
So although there are many mold abatement companies and ways to remove mold , it has been clear to me that the IICRC and the IICRC S502 Guidelines to remove mold are the best way to reassure that you are getting your mold abatement performed correctly .
