How do you remove mold in the house in Baltimore Maryland?

Removing mold in the house looks easy , but understanding the right way to remove is more challenging .

The mistakes that most homeowners make creates an understanding of why there are professionals in the mold remediation industry . Let’s discuss why doing  it yourself mold removal can actually be more harmful.

For an example Mr. homeowner notices what he thinks is mold in the house down in the basement .

His first reaction is to take an old cloth and some product he bought in the store that advertises all his mold to disappear.

As he wipes away the mold on the wall , he notices that the mold growth has disappeared and is satisfied that the mold will not make his family sick .

Just to be extra careful , he buys  mold stain blocker paint and paints the product over the areas that mold has been visually eliminated .

A few weeks later he notices that the areas where he cleaned the mold has returned and actually has increased in new areas near where he cleaned the mold the first time.

Confused , he applies the mold cleaner and again the mold has disappeared . Again he revisits the basement a few weeks later and again the mold in the house has returned .

What’s going you ask and why is the mold cleaning product he purchased not working ?

Well lets learn a basic understanding of mold . Mold has roots similar to plants that have dug themselves deep into the wall . Mr. Homeowner for a comparison explanation has cleaned the top of the mold , but not the body or the roots of the mold growth he found . To make matters worse , every time Mr. Homeowner cleans visible mold he releases the mold spores from the mold colony into the air spreading to other parts of the basement creating new mold colonies .

So what should Mr. Homeowner do ?  Well the answer is to follow the IICRC S502 Guidelines that most states who have mold licenses requirements follow.  The guidelines are about 260 pages , but I can list most but not all the steps to successfully remove the mold .

  1. Set up a sealed containment around the work area of where the mold is in the house
  2. Inside the containment , have a negative air machine running all the time.
  3. Any materials that can be easily removed like carpet and drywall must be removed to eliminate the root system.
  4. Scrap any wood surfaces

The above steps although not 100 % complete will safely remove all visual signs of mold . What remains is the microscopic mold spores that only a mold tester can determine if they are gone.

Although it is possible for Mr. Homeowner to remove the mold using the IICRC S502 Guidelines , it takes years of understanding and practice by a IICRC certified mold removal company to do it right .
