How to perform black mold clean up ? 

As I tell my clients in Maryland , it doesn’t matter if it's blue , green , penicillin or blue cheese , any mold in excess amounts can effect the occupant  of the house or building in different ways .  To avoid giving incorrect medical advice , I have on purpose avoided understanding the medical effects of mold especially black mold . If you have someone in your home or office that gives medical advice on the effects of black mold , I would question the persons ethics and knowledge on black mold clean up. 

But as I said above when it comes to black mold clean up , it doesn’t matter what color or kind it is we still follow the IICRC S520 Guidelines or state guidelines if your state has license requirements . New York has a department of Health guideline for mold removal, but it's outdated and shouldn't be followed ( that’s my opinion ) . 

What are the IICRC S520 Guidelines for black mold clean up ? 

The guidelines are the same for any type of mold . It starts with the following steps . To keep this article easy to read , I have left out information that is important to know . Please either read the IICRC S520 guidelines or you can call me Jeff at 410-458-5371 . Please if you are not in Maryland , call your local mold remediation company . 

The first step in black mold cleanup , is to build a containment . A containment is a plastic four wall temporary enclosed area that surrounds the area that will be worked on to removal back mold . 

The second step is to bring in a negative air machine that sucks in black mold spores in the containment and then the .04 % microns of mold effected air is blown out of the house. 

Once the containment is set CORRECTLY and negative air machine is set up CORRECTLY by IICRC S520 standards , technicians walk in to the containment using the CORRECT body Personal  Protective Equipment to prevent the breathing of black mold in their lungs etc. 

After all visual signs of black mold are cleaned  up , the containment can be taken down and the negative air machine can be removed . 

Please be aware that I mentioned " visual inspection ".  Mold spores are very tiny and microscopic and can be in the area of the black mold clean up work area. 

It is recommended that a competent mold tester ( not your black mold clean up company as this is a conflict of interest ) or an Industrial Hygienist be called in to do a clearance test to make sure that the black mold clean up was done correctly .
