Question: How to get rid of mold ?
If getting rid of mold was an easy answer then there wouldn’t be as many articles , removal methods , etc out on the internet .
To understand how to get rid of mold you need to understand why mold is an issue .
So to explain the issue , it’s best that I use an example that is similar in most home and properties that have mold issues.
Let’s use the usual example of a homeowner that spots dark black growth on their walls . The homeowner is extremely concerned and opens up their phone and searches , “ How to get rid of mold “ just like you just did .
The homeowner sees hundreds of advertisements and articles on mold and mold removal and as you can imagine is more confused and upset then before .
So out of frustration they piece all the mold information together and decides just to start cleaning the mold off the wall . The homeowner finds a make believe mold removal chemical called “ Get rid of mold xxx” . Sounds impressive !
Well I can’t make a general statement on all the mold cleaning products out there , but I can tell you that if you use any cleaning chemicals , you will succeed in removing most of the growth off the wall . What you won’t remove is the smeared mycotoxins and remaining mold particles now pushed into the wall . Yes the wall has absorbed these mold related particles creating future issues .
To make matters worse , most property owners and homeowners do not realize that mold has roots . Those roots have grown in the wall and just like plants will find a new home to grow and flourish .
Did I make matters worse ? Sorry but I need to add one more problem when just using chemicals to get rid of mold . When you are agitating the mold to clean , you are forcing the mold to shoot out mold spores so the mold colony can once again become a great colony spreading mycotoxins into the air.
So what’s best way to get rid of mold ? Well so I don’t miss any steps or information , I am going to suggest that to get rid of mold you should follow the IICRCS502 guidelines to get rid of mold .
The IICRC S502 guidelines are an international and excepted suggestions on how to get rid of mold . The basics of these guidelines are :
- Set up a sealed containment around the work area to prevent mold spores from contaminating other areas of the home.
- Inside the containment have a negative air machine ( not an air scrubber ) to remove mold spores in the air and send these spores outside the home using a HEPA filter .
- Remove all materials ( like drywall ) completely and take it outside .
- Completely clean the inside the containment to a hospital level clean
