What do I do if I find mold in the house ?

There are many options and decision you can make when seeing mold in the house .

But first , I need to ask you a question ?  Do you really see mold ?  Now don't be insulted because many of the folks who call me do not actually see mold . Their actual concern is that they either smell what maybe mold , or have health symptoms that could be connected to mold growth ( possibly ) .

If you believe there maybe mold in your home and do not see it , you have a few choices .

One is to call a mold tester and see if the tests reveal a high level mold spore count and what kind of mold it is . The problem with a " mold tester " even if they show you credentials or certifications is that all they can show you are the results . The tester can't really give you the exact solution , because unless the mold tester has an Industrial Hygiene accreditation or has the correct accreditation  to give you a detailed solution all you have is a hard to read university level biological readings . No solution .

Two you can contact an Industrial Hygienist ( IH ) or Certified Industrial Hygienist who is basically a scientist who you pay to analyze the situation and then assist you on solving the air quality situation . What's different is that an  IH is a real university educated and licensed scientist who knows via science how to solve your issue .

Now let's say you do see what you believe is mold in the house . What do you do ?

Although giving you all the exact details her win this article would bore you to tears , I will advise you by using the IICRC S520 Guidelines . The IICRC S520 Guidelines is the most widely used guidelines for removing mold correctly in your house.  Most states who require that mold testers and mold remediation removal companies have licensed either require or base their mold licenses on the IICRC S520 Guidelines . The guidelines explain how to remove mold and other facts .

Here is a limited list of what the IICRC S520 Guidelines advises for mold in the house .

1. Create a plastic containment that creates a tight room around the work area of removing mold .

2.  Anyone entering the containment must have all necessary PPE ( Personal Protective Equipment ) and be correctly fitted by an approved person .

3. A negative air scrubber is placed inside the containment area continually until all visible or IH approval of mold spores has been removed.

4.  Clean the area inside to the level of hospital grade before taking down the containment .

5. If you are using an IH to do a clearance test , then make sure you have their report showing you have safe levels before removing containment .

The above list is usually recommended for a IICRC Certified mold technician and a IICRC certified firm to perform the mold remediation removal .
