So you woke up this morning and you hear a weird sound coming your basement . You go down to discover a horrible smell and sewage all over your carpets , concrete floors and soaking up your walls . The next question after the initial shock is what do I do ?
Well you have two choices in handling the clean up of sewage in your basement .
- Clean it up- yourself or have a friend do it .
- Hire a professional .

- Clean it up yourself .
Ok so you decided to clean the sewage damage in your basement yourself , because of course you think that the sewage is yours or your families . What most don’t realize is that sewage back ups are caused by tree roots , broken pipes or excessive rain water during or after a storm . The sewage back up causing issue maybe way back where your neighbors sewage lines are . That’s right , strangers sewage and your sewage get mixed up and then poured into your basement , They may have medical issues like AIDS and other dangerous diseases . Some may not be curable .
So when you are deciding to cleanup the sewage clean up yourself , remember you are playing with fire and could be endangering your health .
The other issue to consider is , “ did you clean the sewage back up 100 % ? Are there small areas or hidden areas that you can’t get to ? What about the walls that absorbed the sewage ? What about the sewage that got under the floors or absorbed into your carpet ?
Any absorbent material like carpet , walls, rugs , you name it cannot be cleaned and must be thrown away .
Walls must be cut out where there they effected by sewage and according to the IICRC S500 , 2 feet of additional drywall must be cut around those areas .
- Hire a Professional. Hopefully in the section before I convinced you that cleaning up a sewage back up , is not a great idea unless you are a professional .

If you are looking up on line to find someone , I’m sure you’ll find 100’s of companies promising you they are the best . But who do you trust ?

The IICRC certifies companies to correctly clean up sewage in basements and other parts of the home and commercial buildings . They are required to follow the IICRC S500 Guidelines that give strict instructions on how to clean up sewage and leave the effected area in a healthy condition .
